Literature Text

Where the sun rises, on Nippon land
From his clan now long since banned
On top of a white mountain high
Stands a masterless samurai

Brought up to know nothing but war
Refuses to meet Death anymore
Escaping from the grave he dug
With all that blood, the crimson drug

Resigned from a useless crusade
He still carries his father's blade
Over hills, on less traveled ground
The rōnin walks without a sound

There's no honor in his way
For he has defied sensei
He can't die, though he does good,
In the way a samurai should

On top of a black mountain high
Stands a masterless samurai
From his clan now long since banned
As sun sets on Nippon land
I'd like to include here the disclaimer that, while I adore Japanese culture and I love the samurais (and before anyone says the plural form is "samurai" as in one samurai, many samurai, let me tell you that I researched this and while I understand that there are no plural endings in Japanese, it would only be confusing to use the plural form of another language when writing English. Neither are technically wrong, I'd say, so let's move on) I don't believe I can properly portray them in my work. While I think that no one was gonna take this as a history lesson anyway, I felt the need to make things as clear as possible so I don't spread misinformation. This is a less serious piece in that regard, as I saw it as a sort of "just for fun" work while I was writing. I would never have thought of it unless the :iconunseen-writers: would have it as the theme of the week. As I said, I greatly admire the Japanese culture and history, and that s in fact why I never wrote a poem like this before. It's th kind of feeling that whatever I wrote, it still wouldn't do it justice. And I don't think this poem does justice to the samurais. But I wrote it, here it is, and I can only hope that someone finds some enjoyment in reading it.

Feedback is welcome, and I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this poem of mine.

This is really nice. It reminds me of this story I read (game I played? It's an interactive fiction) called "Samurai of Hyuga"
